Meet Our Leaders

Richard Schulz, Chief Executive Officer
Richard possesses nearly 20 years of extensive experience in healthcare administration and finance, and he is passionate about sharing those skills with the Upstate community. He has served in various financial leadership positions within hospitals in Florida, Maryland, and Virginia before coming to South Carolina.

After securing his bachelor’s degree in public administration from Georg Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Richard went on to earn his master’s degree in healthcare administration from Walden University , Minneapolis, MN. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Richard enjoys serving the Spartanburg community as a Rotarian and is a member of the board of directors for the Salvation Army of Spartanburg. He currently resides in Spartanburg with his wife of 15 years, Sally, and his two children, Richard and Natalie.

 

Angie Jones, Chief Financial Officer
With more than 15 years of finance and accounting experience, Angie is well-equipped to lead our financial planning, management, analysis and reporting initiatives for the hospital. 

Angie earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

 

Dr. Timothy Murphree, Medical Director
Dr. Murphree has practiced in the acute rehabilitation setting for more than 20 years and is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and neurology. His specialty training includes physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as neurology. He has served as an assistant professor at a medical university and as medical director for other acute rehabilitation hospitals in South Carolina and Austin, Texas.

Dr. Murphree earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., and a doctor of medicine degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. He completed and internship and residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, N.Y., and a second residency in neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.

His is a member of the Southern Medical Association, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the York County Medical Society.

 

Heather Crisp, Director of Compliance
With 22 years of experience of bedside nursing and management, Heather brings skill and talent to her work. She oversees quality and regulatory compliance at the hospital, thus assuring our patients the very best of care.

Heather earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. Today, Heather enjoys giving back to her community by participating in Relay for Life and through volunteering with the American Red Cross. She was born and raised in Spartanburg, S.C., and lives here with her husband, Frank, and two sons, Cameron and Cason.

 

Kali Junker, Director of Patient Outcomes
Kali’s passion for being a nurse was ignited in the 6th grade after she shadowed a public health nurse practitioner as part of a Girl Scout project. Now 13 years into her career, Kali’s passion for nursing care still continues to grow. 

A registered nurse, Kali has worked and traveled throughout the United States and Caribbean. Her past includes experience in rehabilitation, orthopedics, neurology, case management and content management systems. Kali earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo., and she is an accredited case manager.

When not working, Kali spends time with her daughter and can be found running, working on “do-it-yourself” projects, and exploring the Upstate and surrounding areas.

 

Kristy Kruger, Director of Marketing & Business Development
Possessing more than 20 years of experience in patient care, healthcare management, and marketing, Kristy’s passion for education and service comes through in everything she does. Kristy is responsible for managing the admissions department and coordinating marketing and public relations activities to educate the community.

A certified rehabilitation nurse, Kristy earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Georgia Southwestern University in Americus, Ga. A native of Albany, Ga., Kristy is married with two sons. When enjoying her leisure time, you will likely find her outdoors or enjoying her passion for animals.

 

Valerie McKenzie, Director of Pharmacy Operations
Building on her 17 years of experience, Valerie oversees the hospital’s pharmacy operations, ensuring quality and accuracy of medication delivery for our patients.

Valerie earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. She is a member of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

Valerie enjoys nurturing young girls’ leadership and self-sufficiency skills through serving as a Girl Scout leader for the Mountains to the Midlands area. She is a native of Charleston, S.C., but has lived the past 17 years in the Upstate. She is married and has one daughter. Outside of work, her passion is with animals.

 

Michael Young, Director of Culinary Services
With nearly 25 years of experience, Michael brings careful attention and creative skill to our culinary services.

Michael was awarded his certification in culinary arts from Midlands Technical College in Columbia, S.C. He is certified by the Association of Nutrition and Food Service Professionals, with an advanced certification in nutrition. He also has earned a Servsafe certification.

Currently, Michael serves as a consultant with Browning Geriatrics, and he participates in a mentoring program for students studying culinary education. Originally from the Upstate, he and his wife, Amy, and two children, Abigail and Jessica, continue to enjoy the area.

 

Gloria Young, Health Information Management Director
Gloria helps our patients through leading our medical records department, which includes coding of patient charts to ensure accuracy of our patients’ hospital visits.

Gloria earned an associate’s degree in health information management from Greenville Technical College in Greenville, S.C. She also is a Registered Health Information Technician and is a Certified Coding Specialist.

A native of Darlington, S.C., Gloria relocated to Spartanburg, S.C. in 1997 where she resides with her husband of 20 years. She also has a son. In her spare time, Gloria enjoys reading, researching and archiving her family’s history.

 

Traci Traynham, Human Resource Manager
Traci loves working with people and watching them strive to become the best they can be. 

Traci possesses more than 30 years of experience in human resources, with 18 being spent as a human resources manager at a local manufacturing plant. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of South Carolina Spartanburg (now called University of South Carolina Upstate).

She currently lives in Moore, S.C., with her husband of 26 years. They have two grown children. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, church, scrapbooking and watching football. She especially enjoys watching her son’s college football games.

 

Carolyn Politi, Director of Therapy Operations
Carolyn’s interest in occupational therapy began as a teenager when she worked at a summer camp for children with disabilities. This led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in political science/history at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada. She then earned a master’s degree in occupational therapy from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2011, she moved from her native Canada to South Carolina as a traveling occupational therapist and decided to stay, becoming part of the family at Spartanburg Rehabilitation Institute.  

While working in inpatient rehabilitation at the hospital, Carolyn discovered a passion for helping patients with neurological conditions return to their everyday lives and activities with as much independence as possible. She since then has become Neuro-IFRAH certified, specializing in treating patients with strokes and brain injuries.

Outside of work, Carolyn enjoys watching NASCAR races, gardening, hunting for antiques, flying with her pilot husband, and spending time with their two rescue dogs, Ratchet and Zoni.

  

Ken Mitchell, Director of Nursing
Having served in various healthcare leadership roles, Ken possesses nearly 25 years of experience in critical care, emergency medicine, and hemodialysis. 

Ken’s interest in healthcare began during his time in the United States Air Force and continued as he moved to South Carolina where he began working at Spartanburg EMS. He then earned his bachelor’s in nursing from the University of South Carolina Upstate, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in nursing administration.

In his spare time, Ken likes spending time with his wife of 20 years, and their two children. He enjoys anything that involves his faith, family, travel, and home projects.
