Jeanne Lacey

Success Story

At 66 years old, Jeanne Lacey from Chesnee, South Carolina, faced a challenging health journey. A few days after undergoing an exploratory laparotomy for a hernia repair, Jeanne developed complications. She was diagnosed with a perforated bowel, leading to a colostomy and the use of a wound vacuum. Her hospital stay extended by an additional nine to 10 days due to these complications.

After being released to a SNF for rehabilitation, Jeanne encountered further complications and returned to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a pleural effusion—fluid accumulation between the lungs and chest wall. Two chest tubes were inserted to address the issue. Once stabilized, discussions about rehabilitation resumed.

Jeanne had already researched her options and expressed a preference for Spartanburg Rehabilitation Institute (SRI), a medical rehabilitation hospital known for its comprehensive rehabilitative care. Unlike a typical SNF, SRI offers 15 hours a week of physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy; regular physician visits; and specialized wound care. Jeanne felt that SRI was best equipped to help her recover and return home.

Unfortunately, Jeanne’s health journey took another detour. Shortly after arriving at SRI, she was readmitted to the hospital for a pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Once treated, she was eager to return to SRI and begin her recovery in earnest. Under the care of a physician-led interdisciplinary healthcare team, Jeanne’s condition steadily improved. Her wounds began to heal, and she made significant progress in her therapy sessions.

“Nothing compares to the quality of care at SRI,” Jeanne says, expressing her gratitude for the team’s encouragement and support.

Now continuing her recovery at home, Jeanne receives home health services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing care for her wounds. Her journey, though difficult, highlights the importance of comprehensive, patient-centered care in overcoming complex medical challenges.
